Can someone fill me in on the details to a car stereo system?

I have a little over 500 dollars and I want to spend it on a stereo system for my car. I want dual 12 inch subs, which is roughly 200 dollars, and I thought this was all I had to get. Then, someone told me that I also need new speakers and a new amplifier to go with it?
How does this work? How do I know what amp to get? Can someone just fill me in on the overall details to completing a new stereo system in my car with new subs?
