Porsche 944S vs Ford Mustang GT?
How would an 87 944S (basically stock except exhaust, K&N filter (does nothing), ignition wires (still does nothing) and some new tires (not race spec)) put up against an 06 Mustang GT (stock) on a racetrack like Mid-ohio or a SCCA course do? I'm pretty sure it will beat it but any clarification?
Assuming equal drivers, the 944S is not going to overcome the power disadvantage compared to the Mustang. There may be a specific track you could find where the transient handling, balance, and braking advantage the 944 has would be enough, but even a track like Infineon that is constantly moving and places a premium on these aspects wouldn't see the 944 ahead unless it had some other advantage (ie, a much better driver or race tires).
The 944 is a very good car, and a very capable track car... but when looking at technology that is ~20 years older, and both the overall power disadvantage and power curve disadvantage... in the end just too much to overcome (probably looking at a few seconds or more a lap difference around most road courses).
