Pipe smoking has largely escaped the sinister reputation of cigarettes, and continues to be a dignified pursuit for a cultivated minority. Unlike the user-friendly design that makes cigarettes a thoughtless consumable, pipes require an adherence to a brief ritual and an aficionado culture has developed around their use. Most pipe smokers are selective about the blend of tobacco they smoke as well as the kind of pipe they use. Others tools and accessories commonly found in a pipe starter kit add a level of refinement to the act of pipe smoking.
The most common materials for pipe construction are briar or meerchaum wood, corncob, or clay, though other kinds of wood and stone are less commonly employed. The act of lighting a pipe is an art in itself and many smokers find that the process is relaxing. Packing a pipe usually entails adding several layers of tobacco and tamping down each one to ensure uniform density. A pipe tool will include a tamper for this purpose. This can be especially helpful if tobacco needs to be pushed into place while it is burning.
Matches are generally preferred to lighters for pipe use because they can be more easily inverted without burning the fingers. Lighters can also impart chemical fumes to the taste of the smoke. A new pipe must be gently smoked at first in order to insure the proper buildup of residue on the inside of the bowl. This will prevent the pipe from burning out and forming a hole. For impatient smokers, several other techniques for coating the bowl can be employed including a mixture of water and honey, cigar ash and water, or sour cream, among other things.
Pipe smoke is generally not inhaled. Instead the smoke is taken into the mouth and nasal cavities and then released. It is common for a pipe to go out if smoked slowly. Alternatively, a pipe smoked too quickly will heat up and produce an unpleasant taste. The regular use of a pipe tool, like the one found in a pipe starter kit, to clean out the bowl and stem is generally recommended for a better smoke. All of these tendencies make it impossible to smoke pipes at the rate of cigarettes and have caused the practice to avoid wide spread commercialization. On the contrary, many people still find pipe smoking to be a pleasant and relaxing pastime.

My dad has one. It has taken him months to get all the parts he needed. He did not have a kit or anything. But for all the rings and sealers and washers and all that good stuff you can get most of the parts you need from Napa. And I will tell you a good book that might help is "a boot legers bible" its for making them. Also you will need a welder or someone with a welder. Thats all I really know about them.
