Vin Decoder for Classic Mustangs - The Key to Find Mustang Parts
You have decided to restore your classic Mustang, or research one to restore, but how do you find out what Mustang parts your particular pony car rolled off the line with? Knowing the vehicle identification number – the VIN will guide you in discovering what was installed on your Mustang when it was brand new. Since we are only talking about restoring a classic Mustang, these codes will only cover what are considered the first generation Mustangs, 1965-1973.
Finding the VIN plate is the first step. The first two year models have the VIN under the hood on the edge of the driver side fender, 1968 models display the VIN at the base of the front windshield where it meets the dash on the passenger side while later models display the VIN on the driver side. The VIN plate may also be riveted to the jamb of the driver side door. Note that you may not find the original data plate, reasons for this could include cases where the door has been previously swapped out, the plate was removed or lost over the years.
The VIN decode follows a basic standard. From left to right the first digit is the last digit of the model year, the code for the assembly plant (1 digit), body style (2 digits), engine code (1 digit), followed by the consecutive unit number. Each model year has some variation on the Mustang parts; the model years are decoded below.

The data plate holds a plethora of information. If you can find the original one for your Mustang you can determine the original color, trim style, the date it was manufactured, District Sales Office number, rear axle identification, and transmission. If the data plate VIN info is different than the VIN plate on the fender or windshield, you'll need to investigate further. Search online for Mustang VIN and data plate decoders to help you decipher the information for your classic Mustang.

i want to get a 99 mustang cobra. but i heard there is some difference between the 99 and 03-04 model. like what is difference like from in side and out, under the hood to behind the from left to right.
There was a lot of differences. First I'll start outside. The front bumper had bigger openings around the fog lights with ducting to cool the front brakes. The hood used an open dual heat extractor style venting. The rear spoiler was flush with the decklid instead of raised like a wing. It came with 17x9" wheels instead of 17x8s on the 99, and had 275/40-17 tires all around instead of 245/45-17s on the 99. They both had independent rear suspension, but the 03-04 was stiffened with 31 spline axles instead of the 99-01's 28 spline axles for more strength. The 99 was an all aluminum 6 bolt engine with DOHC heads, 2 cams per head, made 320hp and 317ft-lb stock. The 03-04 was an iron block aluminum DOHC 2 cam per head with an Eaton 112ci supercharger huffing approximately 6psi of boost into the engine to make a rated 390hp and 390ft-lb, but actually makes about 420hp. The 99 Cobra uses either a T-45 or T-3650 5 speed manual trans depending on which half of the production it was in, while the 03-04 has a T-56 6 speed manual transmission. The 99-01 cobra weighed in around 3400lbs coupe, 3550 for convertible, the 03-04 coupe was just under 3700 and the convertible was almost 3900. The interior was a little bit nicer in the 03-04, but otherwise was almost identical, other than better leather and better side support on the seats.
