A Variety Of Ways To Get Heating Garages
He had seen scores of places as a child because his father was in the Navy. They had been living in Bremerton, Washington when he was in the fifth grade, and his father's boat, a submarine tender, had gone to the yard for repairs. The two memories that stayed with him from that stay was when they had gone fishing to Lake Tiger and when they had gone to a race-car garage behind their house. The mechanics would be rebuilding a midget racing car for the weekend race and he would simply spend hours standing there and watching them at work.
He never ever thought about heating the garage then, however, that thought occupies his mind mostly now. In the heating of a garage, there are different issues involved than heating a house or an office building. While opening the door of a garage, one has to be careful because if it is very windy, then it might just take out all the warm air from the inside in a flash.
To heat a place like that you should apply radiant heat. A giant radiator is connected to the floor and it radiates a great sum of heat that balances the heat loss from the open doors without any difficulty. The radiant floor, somewhat like the sun, continues to supply unabated heat to the garage and it does not matter whether the doors are open or closed.
Apart from the normal boilers, installing waste oil boilers is a smart way of meeting energy needs as used oil is easily found in all garages. The addition of a snow-melt system is a smart thought as waste oil is already there. The installation of the snow-melt system is best done in the pad, at a distance of 5 feet, outside of the garage doors. In doing this, you ensure that the plows are well away from the doors. Apart from this, in the presence of ramps, a snow-melt system ensures a safe entry and exit for the garage.
Garages for vehicle maintenance have their doors opened every sixty minutes. Those garages dealing in the repair of equipment are opened daily. Garages that are used as a storage area might be opened only monthly. A functional garage obviously has a different comfort need than one which is simply a storage space.
While the doors are coming down, the garage's temperature must not vary. If you maintain a temperature of around 60 to 65 degrees F in a working garage, it is very comfortable to work in it, and the workers can wear two layers. Here are other factors that one should have in mind. A high-quality exhaust is the prime need of garages that use solvents, paint, or run engines, along with a well-built ventilation system. The exhaust also ends up sucking out the warm air from the room. The heating shall have to recompense this debit of heated air. Many garages are built either from concrete block or steel frame with aluminum siding. Concrete has unusually large infiltration rates and is a bad insulator to boot.
The cases where aluminum with sidings is used also have similar problems. Thus, the latest method of insulation should be taken as a major aspect of the construction and design of the garage. Garages that are being modernized should also have this point taken care of.
Another way is to lessen the heating requirements of the space by applying a layer of insulation all round the slab's boundary. The best thing is to use two inches of polystyrene to insulate the space. If the garage is providing all night storage to vehicles having snow and ice on them then the floor drainage has to be really effective and has to be efficient at all times.
