Poker Players Pedigree
When I was a young teenager my Dad and I would often go to Longacres racetrack up near Seattle. I had a great time mainly because I got $20 from my dad to bet for the day!
I recall my favorite horse from back them, a giant horse named Ben Adhem, this horse started out in $2500 claim races (for those not familiar, it is a race that allows any horse entered to be purchased for the claim amount) and all he did was win and win impressively.
Every other week or so Ben Adhem would race again this time moving up in ‘class' until eventually he was just in stake races, ultimately earning Horse of the year. I mention this because I never understood why a races ‘class' would affect how well a horse would run, I mean after all if you can run 6 ½ furlongs in 1:15 seconds why can't you run that fast no matter who your competition was. I still don't know the answer may be that horses are intimidated just like people are.
I think this translates in the poker world to, while most people will either cite a player's ability to read others, or the individuals Poker I.Q. for the reason they are super successful, I think the reason is much simpler, they are not afraid.
Think about that for a moment, when stakes are high most of us get nervous and start second guessing ourselves, or if a tournament is getting to the final table and you're in the top third, you start playing conservative. I watch professional players on T.V. quite a bit and I see some very stupid decisions that I would never make, but these guys make them and live with the consequences. So I don't think professional players are that much better than really good online players, the difference is their ability to deal with large pots without altering and intimidate, much as I suspect ‘high class' horses do to ‘lower class' horses.
So what is your pedigree are you a great 'claims race' player or are you ready for higher stakes? I think there are a number of Ben Adhem's out there, people ready to move up in class, all they have to do is make the commitment and overcome hesitations, let's face it odds-are-odds, a pair of pocket aces in a $1.00 tournament has the same odds of winning if they were dealt in a $1000 tournament, the wild card is you, are you going to be intimidated? Or are you going to play your hand the same way as if you were in a $1 tournament and be able to live with the outcome.
