From Stop Position Transmission Won't Shift

When the transmission won't shift on first gear from stop position there is a problem with the clutch linkage. Transmission troubleshooting starts by determining the trouble symptoms, the symptoms for this kind of problem is that when shifting on first gear it won't engage but there is no grinding sound is present when trying to shift.

When shifting a manual transmission, the clutch pedal is depressed to disengage the clutch so that you can shift on a gear using the shift lever. The clutch linkage is the one that disconnected the clutch disc and the flywheel when shifting in gear. When the clutch linkage is damage or out of alignment this can cause shifting problem such as you cannot shift in any gear. However, when the clutch linkages is just slightly out of adjustment you can still shift in gear but there is grinding noise coming from the transmission while shifting.

When you encountered this kind of problem what can you do?

While you are in the road and you encounter this kind of problem, drive your car by  try shifting in 2nd gear this is usually possible having problem with shifting in first gear. Bring your car straight to auto repair shop specialized in transmission problem and then ask the mechanic to first adjust the clutch linkage to fixed the problem. If the problem still exists then you have no other option but to have the clutch assembly opened up to determine what causes your car not to shift in first gear.

If you change the position on the 'gear box' in an automatic car, such as N to D. Will it cock up?

WIll i have to be completely still before i can change it from Drive to Reverse?

Just bought an automatic car! dunno how they work.
as in in NEUTRAL going BACKWARDS down a hill. I was told it would bugger it up changing into drive. but i dont beleive it.

Most autos have 1 2 3 D N R park.
Select 1 and accelerate. The car will accelerate up to the rev limiter.
Select 2 and accelerate. The car will accelerate and then change up into second and keep accelerating up to the rev limit. Slow down and it will change back down into first when the revs allow.
Select 3 and accelerate. It will accelerate and change up from first, into second and then into third. Again it will change down again into a lower gear when the revs allow.
Select D and it is completely automatic. Changing up and down the gears as you accelerate and slow down.
Select R to go backwards.
Just like a manual gearbox you only have one going backwards gear...
Select PARK when you have stopped and want to park the car. PARK will lock the transmission which will prevent the wheels from turning. Think of it as a second handbrake. It also prevents you from starting the car in gear. Autos will only start in PARK or neutral (N). Remember that for when you start driving it and leave it in gear. IT WON'T START!
My Discovery was a four speed. You could only get fourth gear when in D.
As with a manual gearbox, i would suggest that you only go from D to R or from R to D when stationary.
