Is it possible to detemine the energy remaining in the exhaust of this Steam Engine

This is a 1 Liter 2 cylinder simple steam engine that has 100 PSI of steam pressure and is operating at 1200 RPM. What is the Torque and how much energy remains in the exhaust if the exhaust temp is 100 deg C.

My first reaction was, "no way", but on reflection, with a number of assumptions, the answer seems to be yes.

Let's start from top dead center of an over-simplified engine:

1. The intake valve is opened and steam at 100 PSI and temperature Ts comes in. This exerts force on the piston proportional to the area of the piston A.

2. As long as the intake valve stays open, more steam enters the cylinder, so both the pressure and the temperature stay constant.

3. At some point the intake valve closes and the steam in the cylinder expands and cools. This is the period of adiabatic expansion, which continues until bottom dead center. At the end of this period, the steam is at a temperature of 100 deg C and pressure Pe.

4. The exhaust valve opens, and as the piston returns to top dead center, it pushes the steam out of the cylinder.

Now come the assumptions:

A. Since the exhaust is at 100 deg C and this is a simple engine, then we can assume that Pe, the exhaust pressure, is one atmosphere - about 15 PSI.

B. If that's so, then the exhaust steam is almost certainly saturated. Let's assume that the steam is saturated throughout the cycle (i.e. the intake steam is not superheated).

These assumptions provide the additional constraints we need.

1. For saturated steam there is a relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature that allows us to determine the path in the state diagram for the adiabatic expansion phase.

2. This allows us to determine the percentage volume increase during the adiabatic phase. Since we know the total volume of the cylinder, this also tells us where in the power stroke the intake valve was closed.

3. This means that we can compute the mean pressure in the cylinder during the power stroke.

4. Work = Force x Distance = Pressure x Area x Distance so Work = Pressure x Volume. We don't actually need to know the linear dimensions of the cylinder, just the volume, which we are given.

5. Together with the RPM, we can compute the total power output of the engine and the torque as well.

6. Finally, we know just how much saturated steam we have in the exhaust and so how much energy there is in it.
