Since the Lotus Elan S1 was made public in early 1960, it soon became apparent that the drive line will not stand up to vigorous driving, a lot of stories about the fearless driver Elan aground miles away from the workshop with a broken rubber error or metalastic joint, and the change meets the road side is not a way to spend time with your girl friend in the Lotus Elan ... not sireee.
Several different alternatives to replace the failed drive to be prepared, some of them suggested that half of the point, when the universal joint was used in combination with a responsible, thinking of this idea is that with the cushioning effect is presented in a drive while in theory the idea sounds, system is still prone to failure.

This excludes the cyclic fluctuations in speed above that a universal joint produces at work on a few degrees from the center, if the angle of operation encompasses far, UJs will have a tendency to lock.
A rubber boot that keeps grease and pollutants from defending constant velocity (CV) joints. CV joints require only periodic maintenance or lubrication; they are made to last 100,000 miles (160,000 km) or more.
The initial cost of conversion of Lotus Elan in CV drive system is high, but the initial cost is fully offset by the long-term maintenance and replacement of donuts.

Another important factor to consider when installing solid CV drive shaft in the Lotus Elan is the simplicity of installation, as well as a system will require the removal of old intermediate shafts and donuts, the new system simply offered to internal and external drive flanges, the normal tools and spanners all that is needed to tension up high tensile fixing.
If the drive shaft kit you require anything other than ordinary tools for installation, and requires the dismantling of the rear suspension of your Elan, the total cost of installation would be much higher than the original cost because of the need to pay for the services of a professional installation engineer.

How do you change the bell section on a CV drive shaft( a ring is on spline shaft) on a 2002 Ford ZX2?
The ring expands on the spline shaft and secures itself inside the shaft housing of the transmission. I've had the whole drive shaft off except the bell portion which will not pull out because of the ring.
The ring is called a "circlip" and sometimes they stick in the transaxle and can be a pain to remove. Usually you can remove the end of the axle by using two prybars and making an "X" with them,crossing the prybars and prying outward on the end of the axle between the transaxle case and the axle end, with the end of the prybars on opposite sides of the axle end. Prying outward needs to be a swift movement, to jar the end loose. There also is a tool that screws onto the end of a slide hammer that fits behind the axle end to knock it loose. You can also remove the axle shaft from the opposite side of the transaxle and look into the housing and you will see the end of the opposite axle. You can use a long punch or an axle removal tool to knock the axle out from the other side.
