Alloy wheels are a hot topic of discussion these days among motorsport enthusiasts. It is among the hottest accessories for a car, be it a luxury car or a small car. These are also preferred decoration items for those of you who are looking to modify your drive. It has inspired a whole new generation of performance savvy drivers. It will not be wrong to say that these wheels are a craze now.
These are not only light in weight; they improve the speed of the cars along with its maneuverability. They come along with an endless choice of design too. You can fit them easily in SUV, car, bike or even a pickup truck.
First we need to understand what alloy wheels are exactly. These are formed from magnesium or aluminum and sometimes both of them. Alloys imply the process of combining raw materials for a particular specification so as to achieve a performance metal. These wheels are much better conductors of heat than those that are made up of steel. They help in proper dissipation of heat from the brakes and also reduce the chances of failure of brake in tough driving conditions.
These wheels are basically made from magnesium and they became popular only in 1960's. They are however prone to flammability and offer poor corrosive resistance. This is why wheel manufactures shifted to a more stable aluminum. Like steel wheels, these are also formed either by forging or casting mechanism.
Alloys no doubt offer exclusivity. Whereas steel wheels are standard type wheels that are sold in high volumes. Steel wheels also perform up to a limit when it comes to high driving performance, whereas alloys offer better strength and durability during high performance driving.
The total weight of the car has a major role to play in its performance. It affects the high speed riving, traction as well as ride quality. Since alloys weighs just one third of those made from steel, they help to reduce weight considerably. They also help to improve braking, traction as well as acceleration. Obviously, the fuel economy also increases.

Alloy wheel are the brainchild of Romeo Palamides, who also created drag racing. He first developed lightweight custom wheels for the purpose of racing and soon they got transformed to what we call alloy wheels today. The growth of SUVs along with the sports cars further fuelled the alloy wheel popularity and growth. Nowadays, companies like Mercedes, BMW as well as GM are producing their own alloy wheels through dealerships. Nearly all of the modern cars are offering these wheels as standard equipment.
Alloy wheels are costly. Their price also varies a lot. Magnesium ones are more expensive, especially if they are of premium quality.

mainly weight transfer and traction. it's easier to steer and launch when you do not send the power to your steering wheels. it is easier to put wider tires for traction and the driveline is much easier to work with than a transaxle. in a fwd when you apply power to the front wheels the weight to the rear wheels and the fron lose traction and do not launch as well. the same transfer happens to rwd but it benefits traction. and massive front tires on a car and skinny in the back just look ridiculous anyways.
