Auto Brakes Service - A Few Indications It May Be Time
It can be argued that the brakes are the most important part of your car. While people discuss engine size, speed, tires, stereos and even style, very rarely do people talk about the brakes. But without brakes you have one major problem. The car doesn't stop. At least not until it hits something. And that usually isn't a very good way to stop. When it comes to your safety and keeping your car looking good, the brakes are, without a doubt, very important. Having your auto brakes serviced on a consistent basis not only keeps you safe but actually saves you money as well.
The best thing you can do is have your brakes checked when you have your oil and filters changed. That way you can replace them before a major issue comes up. It only takes a couple of minutes to check the brake pads to make sure they're still in good shape and having them replaced only takes an hour or so. You will save money by replacing the brakes instead of waiting until you need major repairs. And you will end up getting better gas mileage which could save you money in the short run too.
When the brake system isn't working right there are several signs that let you know it needs service. When you put your foot on the brake and hear a squeal, that's the first sign your brakes need to be checked. Many manufacturers put a little bar on the brake pads that are designed to squeal to let you know that you need to have them checked. However, if you ignore that squeak and start feeling a grinding sensation when you put on the brakes, then you really need to get them checked as soon as possible.
What that grinding sensation means is the rivets that hold the brake pads together are actually cutting into the drums or discs. You will end up having to replace the discs or drums along with the brake pads if you don't immediately have them checked. This means you'll wind up with a very expensive brake repair instead of a comparatively inexpensive brake pad replacement. You gas mileage can also be affected when the brakes get that worn out. Your car will end up using more gas to get you from one point to the next since your car is working harder because the worn brakes can start dragging on the drum or disc.
Have your brakes checked on a regular basis. Not only is it safer for you and those around you but it saves money. Replacing pads is a lot less expensive than a full brake repair and it keeps your car from using too much gas. Not only will you know that you are driving a safer car, but your wallet will thank you as well.
