Taking Your Ferret Home
Choosing Your Ferret's Cage
There are several things to think about when you bring a ferret home. The first thing is that you need to do is to choose an area for your ferret's cage. Don't forget that the place you pick will be where your pet will spend a lot of its time. Ensure that the space is comfortable and safe. There are lots of choices available for ferret cages so be sure to pick one that gives your pet room to run around. Be sure to get some soft bedding for the cage so your ferret's home is comfortable and he is not in danger of hurting himself. Consider a ferret cage that has a plastic bottom as they will be easier to clean. Cages with metals bottoms will rust and start to look shabby after several washings. However, if you do purchase plastic coated metal make sure that your ferret isn't chewing the coating off. If they ingest bits of plastic it can cause an intestinal blockage. the cage should have several levels as well as large doors. The large doors are so your ferret doesn't get stuck while trying to get out.
Getting a Ferret Hammock
Ferrets like to sleep between 15 and 20 hours each day, so make sure you buy them some sleeping sacks and hammocks so they'll be comfortable. You'll want to ferret-proof the room as well, as you ferret needs to spend a couple of hours each day outside of their cage.
Picking Ferret Toys
Toys will also help to keep your ferret active and happy. However, be careful about the types of ferret toys you purchase as some could put your pet's life at risk. Ferrets have really sharp teeth so choose strong toys. Cat toys can be a good choice. Avoid any foam or plastic toys that can be easily damaged. Don't leave any of the toys in your ferret's cage if you're not around to supervise. If your ferret eats a piece of a toy it can easily result in an obstruction that will need to be surgically removed.
Ferret Odor
Ferrets are part of the Mustelid family, which includes weasels, badgers, otters, etc., and so they have an odor. You should consider scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian to have your ferret neutered and de-scented. Most likely both procedures can be done at the same time. Always follow your vet. Make sure your ferret gets its vaccinations and its scheduled examinations too. Most baby ferrets (kits) have only had their first set of shots when you buy them. Make sure you know what shots they have already received and when they got them so you can tell your vet. When the first set of distemper shots are done your ferret will only need the shot once each year. Booster shots will be needed, too. Set up a schedule with your veterinarian.
Ferret Diet and Health
High quality food is required to ensure your ferret's health. Don't choose food that has been made from frozen meat. It's also a good idea to find out what brand of food your ferret was getting before you brought it home. If you're changing either the type or brand of food, make sure to do it slowly by mixing small portions of the new food with the old one and slowing increasing the new food while lessening the old one.
Are Ferret Treats Necessary
Ferrets don't really require snacks but if you choose to give them treats choose healthy ones like cooked eggs and meat. Candies or sugary treats will only harm your ferret. Preparing well in advance for the arrival of your newly adopted ferret will make sure that your new pet stays healthy and happy.

Can an organ get stuck up under my rib cage?
While jumping up onto and stepping down off of a platform while working out, I felt a very sharp pain in my right side, just below my ribs. For the next hour after that, if I bent in half, it would hurt. If I tried to use my stomach muscles for any exercise, it hurt. After a little bit, the pain wasn't quite as acute, but still there.
Later, while stretching out, I leaned back slightly on a foam roller and I felt like- and could literally see- a big bubble pop out from under my right rib cage. The pain subsided a little so now it is more sore than anything.
I still experience a sharp pain right there if I bend over and tighten my stomach muscles, but it isn't nearly as bad as it first was.
I read something about a hernia- could that have been it? Just trying to figure out if I should go to the doctor or take a muscle relaxer and get over it.
