how to trace a curve by looking at graph of another curve?
Hey the problem is like this. A curve is drawn and it is f(x). Now another curve with a function like -2*f(x+3)-1 has to be plotted just at looking at the f(x) graph. How is it possible? Can anyone give best possible ideas of tracing this curve? Please and advance thanks
Yes, it's possible. Just realize what each additional piece will do to the curve:
f(x): This is just the curve, and would be easy enough to copy.
f(x+3): This curve will have the same shape as the original, shifted 3 units to the left.
f(x)-1: This curve will have the same shape as the original, shifted 1 unit down.
-f(x): This curve will have the same shape as the original, except that it is reflected in the x-axis. It will appear upside-down.
2f(x): This curve will have a similar shape as the original, except that it is "stretched" by a factor of 2.
Putting them all together:
-2f(x+3)-1: This curve will have a similar shape as the original: it is the original curve, shifted three units to the left, stretched by a factor of 2, reflected in the x-axis, and shifted down one unit.
It'll probably take some concentration, but it's certainly possible. Or you could trace the curve, then put the axis on afterward:
1. Trace the graph
2. Rotate your paper through 180 degrees. ("Turn it upside-down" -- although in this case your actually turning it "rightside-up".)
3. Draw the y-axis. Put the y-axis 3 units to the right of its position on the original graph, and make tick marks on the y-axis closer than they are on the original. You should make two tick marks on your graph for every one tick mark on the original.
